THE HOLLOW FORM- ANIMAL WHISTLE
Objectives:
Ø To continue development of the pinch method. By connecting 2 pinched forms of equal size and attaching them to create a hollow form.
Ø To focus on overall refinement of spherical form or egg form. Create proportional pieces so they can be attached.
Ø To include textural surface treatment to enhance overall design.
Ø To creatively add to hollow form to make it into a sculpted animal either real or imagined.
Ø To successfully create an object that is also a whistle. To follow proper procedures on whistle handout in order for the whistle to work.
Ø To focus on the various states of clay in order to be successful with this project, by making sure that all parts connected are the same state of clay (the same wetness and dryness.)
Vocabulary:
Clay Terminology: The stages of clay: plastic, leather-hard, bone-dry, greenware, & bisqueware.
E & P of Design: form, texture, proportion, unity.
Criteria:
Ø Whistle must work.
Ø Form must be made into animal sculpture.
Ø Surface should have texture that relates to the animal form.
Ø Crafted well
Procedure:
Create 2 pinch pots of equal size. Score and slip the rims and attach pieces to create a hollow form. Smooth and refine form.
Add animal parts(appendages) to body (pot form) in order to create a stylized animal sculpture. Smooth and refine, then add texture to areas that are appropriate to make it look like the given animal. Work on creating the facial features by impressing , or carving the details. Add whistle parts follow instructions on handout. Fuss with the holes to make it whistle. Refine clean up. Put on Greenware shelf to dry, and be fired.
Evaluation:
Ø Does it whistle?
Ø Sculpted animal form has attention to detail.
Ø Textural surface treatment works and resembles textures on animal.
Ø Overall animal body parts are proportional to one another.
Ø Craftsmanship of construction of pinched forms, symmetrical halves, walls same thickness, whistle parts incorporated into animal design.
